  • Encourages local hiring and the established of a systematic process for demobilization as well as community quotas.

What is local employment?

Local employment represents a direct benefit of a mining or oil and gas operation and is often one of the biggestexpectations of local communities.Companies exploiting projects in different parts of the world commit themselves to hire locally and provide positive benefits to communities by enhancing skills and providing income.

Why is it important to address those issues?

For the communities:

The jobs and business opportunities created by the companies developing projects represent a significant opportunity for local people to benefit from a company's presence and gain access to cash. It also contributes to the local economy development by enhancing skills and providing income.

For the project's developers:

Local people have a good understanding of the regulatory framework, customs and culture and can provide a significant expertise to a company operating in a host country. Local employment is also a way for companies to contribute to local economy and strengthen community relations. To do so, they have to set up clear hiring and procurement policies and be aware that conflicts may arise with the communities due to different point of views about employment opportunities. However inappropriate or inadequate management of local employment can lead to poor acceptance of the project, increased tensions between communities and company, and ultimately loss of the company's social license.
