module
To support its clients meet their reporting needs, Borealis has developed a module that enables the organization and presentation of required information in real time, including detailed performance summaries of operational activities. This feature relies on industry-wide metrics to support reporting, including the guidelines recommended by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). This tool has proven itself to Borealis’ customers and allows both project-level local teams and corporate level decision-makers to efficiently track operational performance.
The Borealis Performance Reporting module is designed to support a standardized process that ensures consistency of reported information, indicators and metrics, while allowing the customer flexibility to select what is reported. The goal is to alleviate the workload of people involved in reporting activities and to facilitate the reporting process, thereby creating organizational efficiencies that lead to a better use of company resources.
- Centralized reporting functions: ability to gather and process information from several parts of one system or multiple systems
- Flexibility on the choice of the indicators that the client needs to report on
- Considerable reduction in time spent on reporting activities
- Identification of opportunities for business improvement
- Improved decision-making
- Creation of a verifiable audit trail and historical reports
- Monitoring of various indicators and creation of links between them
- Helps align social and environmental performance objectives with daily operations
What is performance reporting?
Local employment represents a direct benefit of a mining or oil and gas operation and is often one of the biggestexpectations of local communities.Companies exploiting projects in different parts of the world commit themselves to hire locally and provide positive benefits to communities by enhancing skills and providing income.
Why is it important to address those issues?
Companies need to ensure that their day-to day operations are in line their broader social and environmental objectives. Implementing a constant monitoring process is essential to achieving this objective, and managers must have access to consistent and coherent performance indicators. Putting a reporting process in place greatly facilitates operational quality assurance and verification procedures, improving transparency and enabling a better understanding of information that is available in company information systems. Why is it important to have a reporting solution?
Social and environmental performance and accountability activities have become essential in the mining and oil & gas industries. Company management, project staff, and external stakeholders represent diverse audiences who require information at different levels of details for different types of analysis. Reports need to be tailored to these needs so that companies can focus their time and resources on the improvement of sustainability performance. Organizations therefore need effective reporting tools to help them monitor activities, track and communicate sustainability performance, set goals and objectives, and identify improvement opportunities.
The three components of the Borealis Performance Reporting module
Progress reports
Progress reports enable companies to centralize and present required information on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. The reports are usually standardized and can contain text, summaries, and key performance indicators about the entire project or program. To produce a progress report, information is usually required to pass through an approbation cycle (agent, coordinator, supervisors, manager, director) that ensures the accountability of the data being used. The Borealis solution facilitates this process through a system of alerts and a retroactive loop which greatly shortens the time spent on this recurrent task.
Status reports
Status reports are a type of punctual internal reports that can be personalized according to the user's needs. For example, a user can enter text and select the indicators, graphs, images, information list, etc. upon which to report for any given time period. However, basic status reports also allow reporting without user input, which means that they are generated automatically and can act as a starting point for adding further information. Status reports also can easily be sent out by e-mail automatically. Finally, the reports can be customized to fulfill national regulatory requirements or legal commitments.
Indicators Management
The indicators management feature integrates performance indicators that have been created from various Borealis modules, centralizes them, and produces reports according to the customer's specifications. It allows a linkage between indicators and established commitments so that companies can evaluate operational performance. This component also enables indicator measurements coming from external systems to be imported and turned into reports.
This feature can also be adapted to support GRI reporting and the requirements of lenders or other stakeholders.
Since the integration of geographical data is one of the strengths of the Borealis IMS, a spatial data analysis and visualization component is offered throughout this module to simplify the understanding of complex information and support decision-making for managers.
